Estudo recente publicado numa das mais importantes revistas científicas do mundo ( New England Journal of Medicine) mostra que houve redução nas taxas de complicações do Diabetes nos EUA no período de 1990 -2010.
Nesse estudo foi observado redução de – 67% de Infarto do Miocárdio, – 64% de mortes relacionadas a crises de hiperglicemia, – 52% de ocorrências de AVC e – 51 % de amputações de membros inferiores.
É uma boa notícia para nós médicos e, claro, para as pessoas que tem diabetes, pois sugere que nos últimos anos, apesar de ter havido um aumento do número de casos de diabetes, estamos detectando a doença mais precocemente e tratando melhor.
Nesse período, houve mudanças nos critérios diagnósticos de Diabetes que contribuíram para o diagnóstico mais precoce da doença. Houve também avanços nos métodos de monitorização da doença (aparelhos glicosímetros portáteis e exames de sangue) e nas alternativas de tratamento com medicamentos e até mesmo cirurgias ( Cirurgia Bariátrica).
Apesar de ser um estudo realizado somente nos EUA, acredito que no Brasil esteja ocorrendo resultados semelhantes pelo menos para as pessoas que tem acesso a serviço de saúde de qualidade. Ainda assim, temos muito a melhorar.
